We in the Philippines are big on fireworks on Christmas and New Years, welcoming the celebration with loud bangs and stuff. It is something we got from the Chinese. Anyways, when all the revelry and the noise dies down and silence takes over, you notice this shrill ringing in your ears. Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sound in the human ear, but with the absence of a corresponding external sound. You hear it but there is no source outside of the hear that is apparently causing it. So you can say that the sound is coming from within your ear.
There are many causes for tinnitus and I hate to be bearer of bad news for those looking , but it is something that cannot be remedied. I use the word, remedy because to say cure implies that tinnitus is a disease, which it isn’t. It is a condition, and the best remedy for it is to try to get people to get used to it and not notice it. Because that is what is annoying, you can hear all the time and it may sometimes get in the way of you hearing external sounds.
My tinnitus is caused by prolonged exposure to loud sounds. No, it was not caused by all the fireworks over the countless Christmases and New Years that I almost went deaf with all the explosions going on.
Here are the reasons for my tinnitus:
- listening to music using earphones, at high volumes
- listening to loud music in general
- being exposed to live loud music, as a hobby I play guitars for a band and have been for 20 years now
- was exposed to constant loud music for about 3 years during which time I did marketing for a club
What I have is basically subjective tinnitus.
