I know this post may be coming a little late, and a post about hangover cures would probably have been appropriate when people were starting to party and not on the 2nd day of the New Year, when you are now sitting on your PC, nursing a hangover.
But, better late than never.
Hangover Symptoms
This is probably what you feel in the morning, after binging the night before… swearing in slurred speech that you aren’t going to drink no more. Well, don’t we all say that?
So, do you have a headache, nausea, thirst and dryness of mouth? Are you lethargic, or groggy still?
Alright I believe you, you do have a hangover. Need some hangover cures? I’ll give you a few.
Hangover Cures
First of all, if you are having a headache, then we got to get rid of that symptom first by dealing with it, with a simple pain reliever like Aspirin, or Paracetamol. Minimizing the headache will help you rest better and probably sleep it off.
If you are dehydrated, you also have to drink something to rehydrate you, like water. I have found that fluids which have electrolytes in them are more effective, for example an electrolyte solution or if you are in the mood for something more exotic, coconut water. That is the water found inside young coconuts and that is very refreshing especially if it comes with some shreds of the inside soft white flesh of the young coconut itself. Extra tasty when served with ice cubes. Well, alright… since coconuts are not often easy to come by, get a Gatorade.
Getting something to eat, is always a good thing when nursing a hangover, but make sure that you are still not in puke mode, and you might end up regurgitating what you had just eaten. Better to take fluids until you are absolutely sure you won’t be puking anymore, then get something to eat, but do not fill yourself too much. Getting re hydrated and getting nourishment will help shorten your hangover.
If you dislike taking pills, and are looking for some herbal hangover remedies, I read that herbal tea also helps in getting rid of a headache.
You boil 2 table spoons of chrysanthemum flowers and 2 table spoons of mint leaves in 4 cups of water for 15 minutes. Drink this tea throughout the day until your headache subsides.
If you do not have those, you can also try other herbs like feverfew, wintergreen, chamomile, and passionflower.
So those are some hangover remedies that work for me. However those hangover remedies are merely cures, when you are already hung over.
Best advise is, first of all, know your limits and don’t drink too much. Second, if you had a little too much to drink and you are about to go to bed, take an aspirin with a glass of water to help minimize, but not prevent it. If you feel like throwing up, do not fight it, vomiting is a normal body response to prevent toxic levels, it is a defense mechanism so if you got to puke, go ahead. Get it over with, make sure you do not throw up in your sleep, too may people have died because of choking on their own vomit.
Get well soon!
