Meet Myla (real name withheld), 22 years old… recently acquired a bachelor degree from a reputable university in Cebu City. Slim, tall, great sense of fashion, she can carry a conversation and certainly has a good head on those shoulders.
For a certain fee, Myla can be your escort, she can keep a guy company whether for functions or nights out… ranging from P3000 or more… and that is just companionship, anything more than that is subject to negotiation and of course, the proper financial arrangement.
Meet Lisa (real name withheld), college student, drives a car, is well dressed and fashion conscious and visibly tech savvy with a latest model high end phone in tow. Lisa can be yours for a night for somewhere between P5000 to P8000 depending on how tolerable or intolerable her prospect is. There are even some who cost much more, and do get their price.
Both Myla and Lisa have agents who contact them when they are needed, however since they also lead seemingly normal lives like go to school or hold a day job, that commitment is subject to their availability, or when they are in need of a boost in finances.
There are today countless Myla’s and Lisa’s in Cebu today and by definition of their acts and the remuneration they receive, they are prostitutes; prostitution being defined as the act of performing sexual intercourse in exchange for payment.
Prostitution is sometimes referred to as one of the oldest professions, and the causes, reasons for and implications vary and are distinct for every culture.
In the Philippines, prostitution though illegal, still remains and by the looks of it, probably is here to stay. Despite the government’s efforts to control it and the growing threat of STD’s especially HIV, prostitution remains rampant. But what is of great concern now now is the growing number of undocumented and unchecked sex workers, on a part time vocation, who are out there… not out on some dim lit street corner but are responding to calls on their high end cell phones and proceeding to rendezvous in their own cars.
In past studies, it has been established that one of the causes of prostitution is poverty. A girl forced to enter into the trade, a victim of circumstance forced upon her by the lack of financial opportunity, or lack of proper skills and abilities that would help her find a decent job.
But things are apparently very different today, for prostitution is no longer a poverty problem, but one of caprice or wanting of possessions or desire for material things. Paid sex to fund a lavish lifestyle that is beyond the means of a girl’s family. This is made worse by the influence of media, Western TV shows and movies that project images that these women emulate… a lifestyle that these women relate to and desire despite financial shortcomings; advertising campaigns that project an image of what cool should be.
It makes us wonder, are these escorts or part time call girls pushed into it by a scantness of money or are they willing participants who need to fund a lifestyle they cannot maintain? Are they actually also victims, not to poverty but to impoverished values.
Regardless of being high end or low end; picked up on the street or coming to you in their own cars; these two types of sex workers are more than just victims, they are at the same time symptoms, outward manifestations of a worsening disease and that is the ever eroding moral fiber worn away by the strong winds of western influence stoked by indiscriminate and imprudent advertising.

People are different, though the same. We have the same necessities, essentially. But nowadays, coz of television and technology. People can’t live without more certain things. People tend to be naive as well when it comes to movies and tv shows. These AREN’T REAL. They should have that in their head, and not believe everything they hear and think is real. It seems that the Phil government aren’t really doing more than they should be. Why would they? When it’s a well aware fact that certain government officials are also themselves the clients for these women. When there is someone who is willing to pay for it, there will always be a product. Or in this case, a service. The women in this country right now aren’t as educated on what their worths are in this world as it should. When that starts happening, maybe things will get better. Not ONE person can change the world, but it only takes one to start the change.
